Nest is a hand-dyed and hand-painted randomly-woven knot. This is not one that you'll find in Clifford Ashley's Book of Knots. It's inspired by the basket-weaving technique known as 'random weave,' which is not completely random. There is some thought involved in making sure the form is sturdy and holds its shape, an over-under, if you will.
After tying so many flat mat knots, the "how" has finally started to click. There is magic in how to snug them up so they stay firm rather than floppy. There are ways to twist them upon themselves, then weave right through those twists. All sorts of little tricks to making beautiful and interesting knots. So I decided to go it alone and create my own - this blend of random weave and knot-making.
The rope, too, had to be special. Nest is cotton rope, with dyes applied by brush, followed by layers of metallic paint washes. It has a subtle shine to it in places, and is mostly fairly muted neutral tones - taupes, browns, faint greens, golds.
Nest is framed in a shadow box backed with linen, and comes ready to hang or can sit on a shelf.
