Petra
Petra was inspired by an artist I've been following for some time. She is a painter based in Germany, and I'm in love with her color palettes. They aren't what I would immediately seek out when I'm pulling colors, but when she puts colors together in her abstract paintings, I'm always drawn to them.
I decided to try to interpret one of her paintings - but really, I ended up pulling particular shades of the palette and vague shapes into a weaving. Shifting from painting to weaving can be frustrating in the sense that we can't "mix colors" in the same way, but it creates little challenges to convey that mixing or shifting in a different way.
The whole process was a challenge to look at art with a specific purpose in mind, to consider how to translate and place color, how to convey abstract and flowing shapes within a more confined weaving apparatus. And, ultimately, how do I create a new piece of art that can stand alone?
This one-of-a-kind hand-woven piece is about 8" x 8" square, with a custom mat and frame ready for hanging.
Custom Frame Size: 11" x 11"
Materials: Wool, cotton, probably some alpaca.
