When I started tying knots, my goal was to work through functional, purposeful knots in Clifford Ashley’s Book of Knots. But there is a whole universe of decorative knots, many of which are imbued with meaning. Working them is meditative in a different way. Many need to be woven and they need to be worked, and re-worked, with patience. They’re also little puzzles, done correctly or not.

I discovered this Sun Cycle Knot in Lise Silva’s book Sacred Knots. It’s based on a ‘double coin’ knot and can be further expanded into more complex knots.

I started working it on the first day after my last day of employment (I was laid off a year after the pandemic started) and the knot's meaning couldn't have been more fitting.

The interlocking rings represent the cycle of the rising and setting sun - endings, beginnings, a constant energetic shift. For me, this represented sunset on over six years at a job that pushed and challenged me and expanded my horizons in lots of ways. The knot marked the day of a new beginning for me and big unknowns ahead.

The Sun Cycle Knot makes a wonderful gift for someone going through a life "shift" - celebrating endings and beginnings.

I've made sun cycle knots many times over now in different ways. This might be my favorite. Humble cotton rope is wrapped in recycled cotton frizz ribbon highlighted with threads of metallic gold.
