Herdy Swaledale Five
This sweet series of wool roving weavings uses Swaledale and Herdwick sheep's wool, inspired by my trip to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales about seven or so years ago. You can visit the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales of England to see the sheep in person -- highly, highly recommended.
Most weavings that use roving - the fluffy bundle of wool seen here - use Merino. Roving is typically the stage of wool just prior to spinning into yarn. Merino has longer 'staple length,' the measure of the wool as it comes off the sheep. The longer the staple, the finer and easier it is to work with. Shorter, it's a bit more challenging.
Of course, there are upwards of 1,000 breeds of sheep, with coats from fine to coarse and anywhere in between. Smooth, crimpy and curly. So many different qualities giving so many different results.
The Swaledale and Herdwick sheep look sweet and soft, but are incredibly hardy and tough. They 'winter' atop blustery, cold mountains in their warm coats until they're brought back down for lambing season and shearing.
Materials: 100% Swaledale wool top roving, cotton, natural driftwood.
Dimensions: 12" wide x 9" long
