Phoebe
Phoebe and Trooper are alpacas who live up the road in Dryden, Michigan. Their home is a farm dedicated to all things alpaca.
Phoebe is an older girl described as "easy going" and Trooper is a younger fella with an "outstanding presence." Together, their fleece combines into a lovely warm, two-toned ball of pure softness. The little ball of roving sat at my local yarn shop for a while and I don't think the knitters knew what to do with it. I didn't need more roving, I thought. I didn't need more stuff.
But there was a picture of Phoebe and Trooper attached to the little ball. Their little alpaca eyes kept looking at me. So, fine. I'll take it.
At home, I introduced Phoebe and Trooper's fleece to some Teeswater sheep roving (light solid grey), plus about a dozen other strands of yarn - including alpaca, Highland wool, and organic linen and cotton. (As I weave, I imagine everything coming together in a field - the different breeds of sheep and alpacas meeting each other.)
As it turned out, the finished product ended up conjuring up the look of our current Michigan "spring," completely unintended. It's a little grey, a little brown, a lot scraggly. There are the faintest hints of green - my favorite spring chartreuse - starting to poke through.
It may seem a little "grey," but there's so much texture, so much softness, so much hope.
