ZigZag Hitch Stick
In 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic shut-down, I spent a good chunk of my down-time learning how to tie knots. Turns out, there are thousands of types of knots, functional to decorative, including so many that are both.
This knotting form was a decorative method sailors used to add or weave hemp ropes around a donut-shaped form to create chafe and prevent damage. Multiple methods of 'hitching' the rope around the ringbolts were purposeful and inventive, and others, decorative. This particular form is recorded in The Ashley Book of Knots as #3610, Zigzag Hitching, and here it's applied in a linear form inspired by Windy Chien from her book, The Year of Knots.
The item pictured is no longer available. ZigZag Hitch Sticks available via commission/special order, including a variety of dimensions and thread colors.
Materials: Cotton rope and driftwood, with cotton thread 'whipped' ends
Dimensions: Approximately 12" long
